This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Serve as an Engineering Technician (Civil) for the US Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, Engineering & Technical Services, Operations Office, Detroit Area office located in Detroit, MI.

Duties

Process field survey data and create maps and engineering drawings to support a wide range of navigation, engineering, environmental, and planning projects. Review and Edit incoming survey data. Ensures questionable field survey data is not used. Performs field survey operational duties. Sets up logistics of a hydrographic survey and trailer a vessel over 25' in length. Work with state of the art hardware and software to create drawings and maps. Incorporate survey data into existing computer aided design (CADD) drawings and maps. Assist with maintenance of Windows-based local fileserver to manage large volumes of survey data.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a valid, State-issued Motor Vehicle Driver's License.
  • A pre-employment physical is required for this position. Work will include physical exertion in terms of walking, climbing, standing, sitting, stooping and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Travel required up to 70% of the time. Travel will include and not be limited to construction and proposed project sites where surveying and data collection will occur while exposed to the elements.
  • Required to obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
  • Required to obtain and maintain First Aid Certification.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. For the GS-06:Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes perform work in connection with engineering measurement operations including hydrographic, topographic, and construction surveys; utilize computer software to record data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e. 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as engineering, construction, or industrial technology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12.Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. For the GS-07: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes perform engineering technician work on hydrographic and/or topographic surveying products; utilize computer aided drafting (CADD) software and design databases to create drawings of the edited soundings for design or construction projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as engineering, construction, or industrial technology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12.Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. For the GS-08: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes perform engineering technician work on hydrographic and/or topographic surveying products; assist in calculating tide corrections and datum transformations; utilize computerized drafting and design (CADD) databases and software to create drawings of the edited soundings for design or construction products; assists with editing raw hydrographic survey data in HYPACK and creating volumes. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as engineering, construction, and industrial technology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of Experience by 12.Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
