This position is located within the ARS, Southeast Area, Subtropical Horticulture Research Station in Miami, FL.
In this position you will be responsible for conducting basic and applied research to improve understanding genetic mapping of composition traits of tephritid fruit flies. You will identify genes associated with semiochemical mediated insect behavior and determine the molecular mechanisms underlying the olfactory response of tephritid fruit flies to key host odorants.
Duties
Improve our understanding of the genetic mapping of composition traits of tephritid fruit flies.
Conduct research to elucidate the genetic variation of insect pests for subtropical fruit crops.
Identify genes associated with semiochemical mediated insect behavior.
Establish areawide tropical pest strategies and emerging technologies.
Requirements

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Basic Requirements for Biology Series, 0401
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.
GS-12:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are: conducting experimental research in the area of genetics and entomology; utilizing multiple research analysis techniques in a laboratory, greenhouse and field plot; publishing research results in peer reviewed journals related to insect genomics; and collaborating with stakeholders.
GS-13:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are: planning and conducting research in the area of genetics and entomology focused on genetic mapping of composition traits of flies; contributing understanding of genes associated with insect behavior and molecular mechanisms; publishing original research as the first author or senior corresponding author in peer-reviewed scientific journals related to insect genomics; collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
GS-14:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-14 level of this position are: developing, planning, and conducting research in the area of genetics and entomology focused on genetic mapping of composition traits of flies; improving the efficacy of fruit fly pest suppression that equips genetic traits; developing effective, environmentally-safe management strategies for invasive pests; publishing independent research findings as the first author in peer-reviewed journals related to insect genomics; establishing collaborations with internal and external stakeholders; and presenting research findings at professional meetings.
