The primary purpose of this position is to provide a student trainee who has been appointed to the Pathways Internship Program with on-the-job training and guidance to further student technical development.

Duties

Performs selected tasks and phases of studies and projects that require application of basic theory and principles in the area of engineering. Participates with senior personnel in conducting non-routine projects. Performs engineering work of limited scope and complexity in support of senior engineers. Provides assistance to senior personnel in planning, monitoring, and conducting special studies, projects, and initiatives. Uses computer/computer software such as information management programs, computer aided design and drafting (CADD) programs, and project tracking programs to assist senior personnel in solving engineering problems and facilitate the work.

Requirements

  • Must meet suitability requirements for Federal employment
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying accredited institution
  • Must sign a Participant Agreement
  • U.S. citizen or national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island)
  • Must be eligible to work under U.S. immigration laws
  • Must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal and Regulatory Guidance
  • You must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an approved program
  • Pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree (Junior/Senior only), Graduate or Professional Degree
  • Enrollment must be at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate)
  • Have a good academic standing (no less than 2.95 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale)
  • Meet the qualification standards of the position
  • Non-citizens may be eligible for employment if Permitted by the DoD Appropriation Act
  • The work requires the incumbent obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft
  • This position is established under the provisions of the Pathways Internship Program
  • This position is a 1-year Intern Appointment, NTE 31 May 2025

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Pathways Internship Positions PLEASE NOTE: This is not a developmental opportunity; this position may be filled at the: GS-04 level. To qualify for a GS-04: Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree is required. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. Recommended Areas of Study: Seeking a professional engineering degree. The curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Professional knowledge of the basic theories, concepts, principles, and methodology of engineering. 2. Skill in applying basic occupational theory, principles, concepts, and practices sufficient to perform student trainee assignments. 3. Ability to follow instructions and guidance to complete assigned tasks and communicate information to others in oral or written format. 4. Ability to analyze problems, identify significant factors, gather and interpret pertinent data, and apply established rules and procedures in order to recommend effective solutions. 5. Ability to learn and apply basic investigative techniques to accomplish work in the subject-matter field. 6. Ability to gather and analyze basic facts, information, and data, and draw conclusions. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
