Selectee will work in the Air Conditioning and Pipefitting Shop of the Maintenance and Repair Section of Facility Management Service. Selectee regularly and as recurring part of job, repairs and modifies a variety of equipment and systems that achieve regulated climatic conditions, for the San Juan VA Caribbean Healthcare System and all other offices and clinics in the system.
Duties
Included, but are not limited to:
Locate and check elements such as those that control low side and high side pressure; temperature of cooling units; temperatures of liquid and suction line; and running time of various mechanisms.
Check for probability of leaks by visual and audible examination of equipment components.
Calculate airflow and the pressure-temperature characteristics for different systems to locate and repair faulty equipment.
Dismantle, repair and reassemble units such as pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receivers and evaporators.
Locate trouble before dismantling, and make repair to insure proper function after.
Inspect, adjust and repair air conditioning, equipment and systems.
Inspect major items to check for stress or strain, cracks, and check all moving parts for wear and possible replacement.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM, may work on weekends and holidays

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
This position has a language proficiency requirement:
1. Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
2. Must be proficient in spoken Spanish.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Selectee will frequently carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 lbs. Work will require frequently stooping, climbing, bending and kneeling for long periods of time.
