The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic position serves in the Maintenance and Repair Section, Facility Management Service, Veterans Administration, VA Caribbean Healthcare System, Department of Veterans Affairs, San Juan, PR.

Duties

The duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Inspects, adjusts, and repairs air conditioning, equipment and systems as reciprocating compressor, water- and air-cooled condensers, water chillers, induced draft cooling towers and air handling units. Manages numerous controls such as temperatures pressure and humidity controls, modulating valves, relays, solenoid valves and dampers; ventilating equipment and systems as propeller type fans, centrifugal fans and exhaust fans; walk in refrigerators cold rooms, ice makers, freezers, refrigerated centrifuges and hypothermia machines, cry-o-cut, cryo-plates, lyophilizes and ultra-low freezer systems. Participates in the inspection of major items which are checked for stress or strain, cracks, plus check of all moving parts for wear and possible replacement, all this to ensure continuity of operation. Assists in periodic check of moving parts of equipment for balance vibration, worn bearings etc., making repairs of adjustments as required (an electronic vibration analyzer may be used). Participates in the inspection of the ventilating and exhaust systems through the VA Caribbean Healthcare System and its clinics and will make changes and repairs if necessary. Performs preventive maintenance inspections of air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilating systems as required by VACO. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 6:30am - 3:00pm; may rotate shifts. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to fifty (50lbs.) pounds. Works will require frequently stooping, stretching, Climbing, bending, and kneeling for long periods of time. AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is frequently exposed to abrasions, cuts, bums or shock broken bones or other serious injury from slips, falls, moving parts and equipment. Frequently work in cramped spaces and around hot, oily, and dusty surfaces. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
