The employee serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the Engineering Service at the San Juan VA Medical Center. This position services AC units and performs tasks in the fields of air conditioning, refrigeration and steam distribution with special emphasis on inspection analysis and follow up for an Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Quality Assurance program.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Overhaul, installation, maintenance, modification, and repair of various types of AC equipment.
Provides preventive maintenance inspections, troubleshooting, of refrigeration and AC equipment.
Performs vibration analysis of major building service equipment such as circulating pumps, air handlers, cooling tower fans, medical air compressors and vacuum pumps, etc.
Tests systems and equipment for leaks, evacuates air and moisture or other foreign matter from refrigerant systems or components using proper refrigerant dryers, chemical dryers, high vacuum pump or drying oven.
Charges systems with proper refrigerants to obtain optimum operating levels.
Installs, maintains, and repairs tubing, valves, fittings, castings, and equipment by welding, brazing, soldering, and flaring.
Examines equipment for wear or damage, replaces parts or repairs deficiencies.
Properly installs belts, pulleys, connecting rods, crank shafts, pistons, rings, fans, overhauls valves by adjusting or replacing gaskets, springs, floats, diagrams, valve fittings, seals and couplings, and abrasive motors and flywheel devices.
Repairs, installs, and modifies all types of air conditioning, heat, and ventilation duct work.
Erects or suspend scaffolding in the performance of duties and is responsible for the proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment.
Work Schedule: 40 hours a week: 6:30a.m. - 3:00p.m. (rotating shifts, including weekends)

Physical Requirements: Employee will frequently carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 lbs. Work will require frequently stooping, stretching, climbing, bending and kneeling for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: The employee is frequently exposed to abrasions, cuts, burns or shock broken bones or other serious injury from slips, falls, moving parts and equipment. Frequently work in cramped spaces and around hot, oily and dusty surfaces.
