This position is located in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Office of the Commissioner for Patents, Office of Patents Stakeholder Experience (OPSE). The incumbent serves as Supervisor of the Application Assistance Unit (AAU) with full delegated responsibility and authority to plan, supervise, and manage all assigned functions and employees.
Duties
The physical worksite for this position is located in Alexandria, Virginia.This position is telework eligible per agency and business unit discretion/policy.
Major Duties for this position include:
- Serves as Supervisor of the Application Assistance Unit (AAU) with full delegated responsibility and authority to plan, supervise, and manage all assigned functions and employees.
- Ensures completion of all technical and administrative operations and exercises full and final authority for all technical determinations arising in the work.
- Serves external and internal customers by providing technical information, resolving a broad range of questions and problems with pre-exam and post exam processing of patent applications.
- Identifies goals, priorities, and tasks that need additional emphasis to support Stakeholders Support Division (SSD) and AAU program objectives.

You must meet the United States Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) qualification requirements (including specialized experience and/or educational requirements) for the advertised position. Specialized Experienceis experience that has equipped applicants with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the federal service. For this position, the next lower grade level is a GS-11
Specialized experience for this position includes: the ability to work independently and function as a subject matter expert in the patent examination process, applying administrative and technical knowledge in relations to patent practices and procedures, agency policies and programs; as well as identifying and addressing customer service needs.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
