Duties

The Social Work Coordinator functions as a member of the Suicide Prevention program. The Suicide Prevention program serves to facilitate implementation of suicide prevention strategies at EKHCS Topeka/Leavenworth Campus and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC). This position may be filled by either a Social Worker or Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor. LPMHC's please apply to: CBSS-12473242-24-SO Total-Rewards-of-an-Allied-Health-VA-Career-Brochure.pdf Duties include but not limited to: Providing a full range of psychological assessment services and diagnosing mental disorders, particularly for complex or unusually difficult patients. Providing comprehensive, evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions, including individual, group, and family psychotherapy. Following national guidelines provided by the Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Suicide Prevention manual. Engaging in in-person and telephone crisis care management, as needed. Engaging in regular clinical contact with veterans identified as high risk for suicide, as needed. Responding to consults placed by Veterans Crisis Line responders. Developing, implementing, and documenting psychotherapeutic treatment plans. Evaluating suicide risk and protective factors. Identifying veterans at high risk for suicide and placing, reviewing, and inactivating Category I Patient Record Flags - High Risk for Suicide. Tracking/coordinating care for veterans flagged as high risk for suicide. Tracking and reporting data related to treatment for veterans flagged as high risk for suicide. Tracking and reporting data related to suicide attempts, preparatory behaviors, and deaths by suicide. Consulting with acute psychiatry and acute medicine staff regarding discharge planning for veterans identified as high risk for suicide. Providing timely and professional updates to appropriate clinical staff working with veterans identified as high risk for suicide. Contacting family members of veterans who die by suicide. Providing education to staff about suicide risk and protective factors, suicide risk screening and comprehensive suicide risk evaluation, gatekeeper training, safety planning, suicide behavior reporting, information about the Veterans Crisis Line, and general suicide prevention information. Providing education about suicide risk and protective factors and information about the Veterans Crisis Line to patients, family members, and significant others. Providing gatekeeper training to veterans in residential treatment programs. Consulting with staff in all parts of the hospital regarding identifying and treatment planning for high risk or potentially high-risk veterans. Interacting with community partners, such as law enforcement or community hospitals to identify and ensure timely follow-up treatment for high risk veterans. Conducting community outreach and education regarding suicide risk and protective factors, gatekeeper training, and awareness of the Veterans Crisis Line. Participating in administrative committees associated with tracking and monitoring of high-risk veterans and serving as back-up to Suicide Prevention Coordinator and other Suicide Prevention Care Managers as needed. Assisting with relevant issue briefs or near miss opportunities. Obtaining any relevant HIPAA clearances to allow transmittal of facility data on suicide attempts and individuals at risk and transmitting the data following cybersecurity requirements as applicable for this sensitive data. Engaging in other related duties, as assigned. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to http://vaww.va.gov/OHRM/T38Hybrid/. English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Social Worker (Program Coordinator), GS-12 Experience and Education. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. n addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring. (b) Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program. (c) Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program. (d) Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s).
