The duties of this position are preformed in the sterile product preparation suite and storage areas of the inpatient pharmacy section at CVVAHCS. The incumbent is a highly specialized technician, who under the authority of the compound Sterile Products (CSP) program manager or designee, and responsible for the preparation of sterile products handled by pharmacy. The CSP pharmacy technician will perform sterile compounding functions to ensure timely and accurate patient care is provided.
Duties
Duties to include but not limited to:
Knowledgeable in United States Pharmacopeia (USP) 797/800/795, Pharmacy Law, VHA Directives, and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) regulations as they relate to practice within the VA Healthcare System and its organizational elements.
Prepares sterile ophthalmic preparations and other complex sterile
Understands specific handling considerations for storage, distribution, and disposal of medications
Ensures that the IV cleanrooms are cleaned daily, and appropriate logs are completed for daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning
Working knowledge of position specific equipment including vertical and horizontal laminar flow hoods and all disposable supplies needed to compound sterile products
Upon completion of the order, contacts the assigned pharmacist for a final check and then delivers prepared products to the wards, clinics, or other designated areas
Must maintain training requirements, national pharmacy technician certification and meet annual competencies required for the position
Assists in other patient care areas as deemed necessary to maintain the consistency of overall pharmacy services
Responsibility for keeping abreast of changes in the Pharmacy service (I.e., interdepartmental memoranda, relevant station memoranda, and policies and procedures and to maintain a general knowledge of VA, DEA, USP and Joint Comission (JC) regulations
Correctly interprets orders, selects, and measures appropriate ingredients, mixes ingredients in an aseptic an effective manner, inspects the final product for accuracy, suitability, and elegance, labels the product, maintains records of the manufacturing process, and supplies the product for delivery.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:

English proficiency
PTCB or NHA certification
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Experience: Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8) and demonstrate the KSAs below.
Grade Determinations: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs for all GS-09 assignments and meet any additional KSAs for the assignment, if indicated:
Expert knowledge serving as a key resource advising others in their particular specialty area or section of the pharmacy (such as procurement, sterile compounding (USP compounding standards), controlled substances DEA, automation, clinical pharmacy, lead tech, contact center, etc.).
Skill in analyzing data for self-driven (independent) performance improvement projects, workload analysis and statistical reports.
Skill in solving problems and implementing corrective actions to maximize outcomes in their program area.
Ability to maintain special accreditations and prepare for national reviews/inspections (e.g., The Joint Commission, Inspector General, American Society of Health System Pharmacists®, controlled substance inspections). (e) Ability to develop training programs and material for orientation, competency development and educational needs for regulatory requirements within the specialized pharmacy program area.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 9.
Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 50 pounds bending/stooping/stretching. Work is typically performed in a clinical setting that exposes incumbent to communicable diseases, biohazards, hazardous chemicals, and hazardous medications common in a health care environment.
