Duties

Performs Preservationist duties such as: Preservation carpentry including structural framing, reconstruction of windows and doors, and finish carpentry using a variety of power and hand tools. Preservation masonry including chiseling, mortar analysis and mixing, and repointing of historic features using hand tools. Preservation painting including color matching, paint mixing, and application of paints, stains, and varnishes. Historic preservation roofing including repairs to flashing, shingles, and architectural elements while working on scaffolding or in elevated work platforms. Other misc. duties related to historic preservation including plastering, metalwork, and condition assessment. Physical Demands: There is considerable physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of various sizes, weights, and shapes. There is considerable standing, stooping, lifting, and bending. Because of the multi-faceted craft aspects of this position, work is frequently performed in stretching, cramped, or awkward positions. Fieldwork magnifies the physical effort required to perform the duties of this position and reflect actual restoration project environments. The incumbent performs various duties from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and where the materials and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. He/she also works under structures, which require him/her to work overhead or in a stretched, cramped, or awkward position. Arm movement is considerable when nailing and using such tools as handsaws and planers. The incumbent may occasionally lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more. Backcountry work may require the incumbent to hike or ride by horseback to the job site in remote locations over rough terrain. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside at field/construction sites, in all types of weather. In the shop, the incumbent is exposed to noise and sawdust in the air, as well as cuts from hand or power tools and danger from flying splinters or chips. The use of some historic preservation tools and equipment may require specific knowledge and skill, as well as the use of protective equipment in the shop or at the field site. The incumbent must work at elevations from 2,000 to 10,000 feet. Temperatures vary from 20 to 105 degrees. Winter snow depths may vary from 2 to 6 feet with icy driving conditions involved. The incumbent may be exposed to snow and ice conditions in winter, rain, and extreme heat in summer.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability to do the work of a Preservationist WG-07 without more than normal supervision (screen out) includes work experience performing the following duties: Maintaining and/or preserving historic properties. Work that provided a fundamental knowledge of current technologies used in historic preservation including, but not limited to: working with others to complete preservation, stabilization, restoration, and maintenance of historic structures. Experience demonstrating the ability to assist journey level preservationists to perform tasks on all of the following skills: roofing, painting, masonry, and carpentry. Related skills may include surface preparation, rough and finish carpentry, cleaning, mortar mixing, minor repairs to stone masonry, and /or painting work. Assisting others with some or all of the following: repointing masonry walls, chimneys, fireplaces, or other masonry features, stabilizing and/or repairing wood frame and timber structures, restoring building elements such as windows, doors, siding, and trim, using a combination of modern and historic techniques and materials which may no longer be commercially available. Utilized hand and power tools which include: hammers, saws, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, drills, tape measures, squares, chisels, drawknives, calipers, and traditional carpentry tools.
