Duties

The Nanoscale Device Characterization Division (NDCD) transforms nano- and atom-scale technologies by advancing measurement science and fundamental knowledge! The Division's mission is to develop and advance the measurement and knowledge infrastructure to characterize nano- and atom-scale engineered materials and solid-state devices for innovation in information processing, sensing, and future quantum technologies.As a Research Chemist on our team, you will: Research and develop ultrafast spectroscopic approaches to evaluate thermal and optical properties of semiconductors for next generation electronics. Assist with the design, construction, and application of ultrafast spectroscopy including ultrafast pump-probe laser spectroscopy, phase-sensitive spectroscopy, phase-sensitive microscopy, ultrafast pulse shaping, nonlinear spectroscopy, measurements of two-photon absorption and the optical Kerr effect. Assist with developing new metrologies to test thermal and optical properties with spatial and depth resolution. Develop and simulate models of optical and thermal properties. Communicate and collaborate with team members, other NIST teams, and external teams to present and publish results as appropriate.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience in ultrafast pump-probe laser spectroscopy, phase-sensitive spectroscopy, phase-sensitive microscopy, ultrafast pulse shaping, nonlinear spectroscopy, measurements of two-photon absorption and the optical Kerr effect; experience in time-resolved photoluminescence and transient spectroscopy, including absorption; AND experience in kinetic modeling to provide insight on excited state dynamics. OR Master's or equivalent graduate degree as defined in the basic requirements. OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements.
