Duties
This position is to provide research, measurements, and services to support development and production of reference materials for chemicals of emerging concern, primarily PFAS. The major duties involve working in teams to develop and implement the associated chemical analysis methods, to improve the understanding of chemicals of emerging concern as they move through the environment and into the food chain, producing environmental reference materials and participating in leadership roles in international standards organizations. This position also includes the maintenance of scientific laboratory infrastructure (such as performing maintenance on laboratory equipment), the maintenance of a scientific laboratory notebook and associated electronic data records, the writing of internal reports and external publications, conformance within a laboratory quality management system, and the performance of other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-12 level (ZP-III at NIST). Specialized experience is described as experience in measuring PFAS, tracing PFAS movement in the environment, tracking other chemicals of emerging concern in environmental matrices, foods, and clinical samples, developing reference materials, writing laboratory reports and manuscripts for publication, communicating with international standards organizations.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
