Duties
The Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation Group is part of the Building Energy and Environment Division, located within the Engineering Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The group develops computer simulation programs and measurement procedures and applies them to better understand the phenomena of air and contaminant transport in buildings and to support industry efforts to improve environmental conditions in buildings in a cost-effective manner.
If selected, you will serve as a Research Chemist. Duties will include:
Conducting research and providing technical expertise in developing, planning, and documenting independent research aimed at assessing technologies and standards related to indoor air quality and ventilation.
Overseeing the development, deployment, operation, and maintenance of analytical tools used to measure the chemistry in the indoor environment.
Contributing input into the direction and goals of the Contaminant Control in High-Performance Buildings Project in the Net-Zero Energy High Performance Buildings Program.
Writing technical papers to describe research results
Presenting research results to technical audiences at conferences and in meetings with other government agencies or industry groups.
Identifying students, guest researchers, and contractors to further the goals of the Contaminant Control in High-Performance Buildings Project.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the above basic requirements, applicants must have one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-09 grade level (ZP-II equivalent for NIST). Specialized experience is described as experience in conducting and presenting peer-reviewed research on topics related to the chemistry of indoor air and indoor air cleaning technologies.
OR
Masters degree or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
Combination of specialized experience and graduate education.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
