The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for general maintenance and repair requirements as established by the Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Foreman, Chief of Maintenance & Operations, or Chief, Facilities Management Service, for the Seattle Campus of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System.

Duties

A Maintenance Mechanic performs the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and various repair tasks throughout the medical center, including the trades of Plumber, Electrician, Carpenter, and Mechanic. Skills up to journeymen level abilities are required. Assigned tasks are generally not as technical as major repairs and installations as required by an employee classified in an individual trade. Plumbing: Inspects, installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs various plumbing devices. Examples include but are not limited to; pipe repair, mixing valves, thermostatic valves, pressure regulators, flush meters, anti-siphon devices and control valves. Performs tasks such as clearing drain, waste and vent lines. Electrical: Inspects, installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs various types of electromechanical devices. Examples include but are not limited to; electrical motors, motor starters, switches, light bulbs, ballasts, and wall receptacles. Must be able to use and interpret readings from various electrical measuring instruments such as amprobes, multimeters, and megohmeters. Carpentry: Inspects, installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs various doors, door alignments and hardware (including closers), locking devices, wall hung fixtures, furniture, shelving, acoustical ceilings, wall repair, floor coverings and other miscellaneous items necessary to maintain the facility. Incumbent may at times be required to fabricate from various wood, metal, plastic and laminate products using tools commonly associated with the carpentry trade including but not limited to; tape measures, saws, grinders and sanders. Mechanical: Inspects, installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs various types of mechanical devices including but not limited to; appliances (ex; washers, dryers, stoves, etc.) pumps, compressors, vacu.um pumps, ventilation equipment, heat transfer and condensing units, medical gas service outlets and various mechanical control devices. General Maintenance: Inspects, installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs the following items; filters and belts, floor tiles (vinyl & carpet), painting, chairs, desks, cabinets, bulletin boards, white boards, pictures, mirrors, clocks, casters on desks, chairs, carts, shelves, paper towel dispensers, soap dispensers, lotion dispensers and sanitizer dispensers. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement, 08/05/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, the ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic at the WG-9 level, without more than normal supervision (SCREEN-OUT). Experience includes but is not limited to: inspecting, installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing: various plumbing devices, electromechanical devices, various types of mechanical devices, various doors, door alignments and hardware (including closers), locking devices, wall hung fixtures, furniture, shelving, acoustical ceilings, wall repair, floor coverings and other miscellaneous items necessary to maintain the facility. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs equipment or components from ladders, platforms and scaffolding and in cramped or hard to reach areas. This can require walking long distances, prolonged standing, stooping, bending, and climbing in uncomfortable or tiring positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. He/she occasionally may handle materials and equipment that weighs in excess of 50 lbs. Working Conditions: The working conditions vary with the environment. It may be inside or outside, and is generally dirty, dusty, greasy, and may be in inclement weather. May be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and/or chemical agents are present such as in the research labs. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protection programs are maintained. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of the medical surveillance programs, may be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualification for duty.
