About the Position: This position oversees safety and occupational health (SOH) for several medical facilities, dental facilities and veterinary treatment facilities throughout the state of Maryland, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia, and Northern Virginia. The main facility is located at Fort Meade, Maryland. Hours of work are 0730 to 1630 daily. A sense of satisfaction for providing a safe workplace for over 1,000 employees and positive feedback for Joint Commission compliance.

Duties

Serve as the Safety and Occupational Health Specialist in a Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC). Evaluate the effectiveness of the Defense Health Agency Safety and The Joint Commission Environment of Care programs for the MEDDAC. Develop and implement programs based on national safety standard requirements. Prepare reports of findings and follow up with appropriate staff to assure that hazardous situations have been corrected. Train staff in safety and occupational health requirements and safe work practices sufficient to ensure a safe work environment.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 1 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
• This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
• This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
• Immunization screening may be required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
