This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Tampa, FL. The Pathology Specialist is an allied health professional, qualified by academic and practical training to assist in providing service in Anatomic Pathology under the direction and supervision of the Chief of Surgical Pathology and Supervisor Health Science Specialist.
Duties

Performs accurate gross examination, sectioning and dictation of all specimens to include biopsies, skin excisions and surgical tissue, both simple and complex in nature;
Selects, prepares, and submits appropriate gross tissue sections for frozen sections as well as for light, electron, and immunofluorescence microscopy as needed;
Uses accurate autopsy techniques to perform post mortem examinations including internal and external inspection and description of findings within appropriate turnaround times;
Performs STAT frozen sections;
Instructs pathology residents, clinicians and other staff members about surgical pathology and autopsy procedures; and
You will perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8am until 4:30pm.

Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: A bachelor's degree (or higher) with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. Transcripts required. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

One (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level of (GS-11) in Federal service. Specialized experience includes: working knowledge of gross anatomy and pathophysiology; ensuring proper processing of tissue specimens, especially those requiring special handling; performing work in the frozen section area to include preparing frozen section slides for review by a pathologist; functioning as autopsy assistant; use of windows based operating system including Microsoft Word and Excel and hospital based computer software systems.

Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing or sitting while performing gross examinations and occasional lifting or pulling of heavy items (bodies, extremities) and above average dexterity in dissection of specimens and cutting frozen sections.
