This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Hawaii has many outdoor activities all year round including surfing, paddling, diving, fishing, and hiking.
Duties
You will work Fire Extinguishing Systems Mechanic Leader leading employees in accomplishing trades and labor work, working alongside others performing all duties of the job and setting the work pace.
Assign immediate tasks to be performed, keep all workers engaged in work, check works in progress for compliance, demonstrate proper work methods.
Install new or modifies existing water-based fire protection systems and associated equipment including alarm check valves, switches, pumps, air compressors fire department connections.
Execute the repair or replacement of failed components identified during inspection and testing.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Within two (2) years of starting date the incumbent must have satisfactorily completed the Fire Suppression Systems Maintenance Course at the Technical Training Center, Sheppard AFB, TX.
- Obtain and maintain within two (2) years of start date, incumbent must possess and maintain a current Backflow Prevention Assembly General Tester's Certification.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and keep current a valid state driver's license and any installation and/or DOD requirement for the type vehicle being operated.
- Protective devices such as but not limited to ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, hard hat and safety shoes is required.
- Incumbent must successfully pass a pre-employment physical and any subsequent annual physical.
- Mission Essential: Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends.
- This position requires 10% temporary duty travel (TDY).

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Fire Extinguishing Systems Mechanic Leader ~ without more than normal supervision. Conduct testing and maintenance of fire suppression systems and backflow prevention systems; install and maintain fire suppression systems and backflow prevention systems for both wet and dry systems; work with both electrical and plumbing repairs - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: The employee works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach locations. Incumbent is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and frequently lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier.
Working Conditions: The employee works in cramped quarters both in and out of doors where there is exposure to mud, dirt, dust, grease, bad weather, bad smelling fumes, etc. The employee will occasionally be required to wear a respirator to perform needed work. The employee will work on ladders, in lifts and aerial buckets requiring the use of fall protection. There is occasional exposure to the possibility of broken bones, burns from corrosives and regular exposure to the possibility of scrapes, bruises, injuries related to the use of power and hand tools, and infection from working at unsanitary work sites.
