Job opening: Fire Extinguishing Systems Mechanic

Salary: $35 - 41 per hour

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Hawaii has many outdoor activities all year round including surfing, paddling, diving, fishing, and hiking.

Duties

Conduct routine inspection and testing of water-based fire protection systems specified by the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) 3-601-1. Reset alarms and restores system to normal operational status. Install new or modifies existing water-based fire suppression systems. Conduct inspections of backflow prevention assemblies using the University of Southern California Foundation for Cross-Connection Control and Hydraulic Research (USCFCCCHR). Install new, alters and removes plumbing fixtures and facilities.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Within 2 years of starting, incumbent must satisfactorily complete the Fire Suppression Systems Maintenance Course at the Technical Training Center, Sheppard AFB, TX or the Fire Suppression Systems Maintenance Course at the Technical Training Center.
  • Within two (2) years of starting date the incumbent must obtain and maintain a current Backflow Prevention Assembly General Tester's Certification.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and keep current a valid state drivers license and any installation and/or DOD requirement for the type vehicle being operated.
  • Protective devices such as but not limited to ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, hard hat and safety shoes is required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to pass a pre-employment physical and any subsequent annual physicals.
  • Mission Essential: Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends.
  • This position requires temporary duty travel (TDY) of 10%.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Fire Extinguishing Systems Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision: perform fire extinguishing systems mechanic duties, conduct testing and maintenance of fire suppression systems and backflow prevention systems; install and maintain fire suppression systems and backflow prevention systems for both wet and dry systems, work with both electrical and plumbing repairs. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires long periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in other tiring and uncomfortable positions. Work requires accessing hard-to-reach places. Frequently lifts and carries item weighing up 50 pounds and occasionally heavier. Work is frequently performed while on ladders, scaffolding and platforms. WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee works in cramped quarters both in and out of doors where there is exposure to mud, dirt, dust, grease, bad weather, bad smelling fumes, etc. The employee will occasionally be required to wear a respirator to perform needed work. The employee will work on ladders, in lifts and aerial buckets requiring the use of fall protection. There is occasional exposure to the possibility of broken bones, burns from corrosives and regular exposure to the possibility of scrapes, bruises, injuries related to the use of power and hand tools, and infection from working at unsanitary work sites.
