You will serve as a MARINE MACHINERY MECHANIC SUPERVISOR in the PORT OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT of NAVBASE KITSAP SILVERDALE WA.
Duties
You will evaluate repair requests to determine the time, material, and parts that are required to complete marine machinery repairs.
You will assign marine machinery work to junior employees through oral or written instructions.
You will use equipment and measuring devices (e.g., alignment scopes, venires, micrometers, precision levels, vibration analyzers) to test accuracy of marine machinery repairs.
You will develop and implement safety practices to prevent unsafe conditions, hazards to personnel, or damage to marine machinery equipment.
You will operate diagnostic equipment to determine reasons for mechanical performance problems in marine machinery or equipment.
You will monitor material or man-hour expenditures for marine machinery repair work to ensure actual times or estimates are realistic.
You will determine problems with mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic marine reduction gears and transmissions to return to full operational capability.
You will plan work to be accomplished by others, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
You will evaluate the quality of equipment assembly, installation, and repair work performed by marine machinery personnel.
You will arrange and track the delivery of material to support scheduled marine machinery job start times.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The work requires long periods of constant standing and walking on the tug/craft while underway. Must be able to climb vertical ladders and steps over three foot bulkheads on rocking tug which requires the use of legs, hands, and arms. Occasionally, will be required to lift and move lines weighting up to 75 pounds. Must have peripheral vision that will enable the incumbent to avoid falls and moving objects. Must have sufficient hearing to hear verbal commands over surrounding noise of tugboat and ship operations.
Must be physically able to stand the excessive heat in a ship's engine and fire room; and be physically alert to see that machinery is working properly. During emergencies may be required to endure long periods of work without rest.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work outside in all kinds of weather. Subject to hot sun, spray, rain, sleet, and ice. Will be exposed to industrial dirt, grease, oil, industrial fumes, and airborne particles. Will be exposed to possible injury from falls due to slippery footing and erratic motion. Will be exposed to possible strains, cuts, and bruises. Exposed to industrial noises generated by operating machinery and equipment with the possibility of hearing loss. Eye hazards will exist in most areas and/or in certain operations. Will be exposed to organic growths (such as sea growth, barnacles, and shellfish) in dry docks, salt water systems, and other areas exposed to sea water. Will be required to use protective devices, clothing, or equipment, while exposed to adverse environmental and hazardous work assignments. Wearing of required safety equipment in designated areas is mandatory (i.e., safety glasses, ear plugs, safety shoes, life jackets, etc.
The incumbent may be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to: fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc. Incumbent may also be assigned to work areas where contact with sewage waste is possible. To ensure employee safety and health, the CNRNW and PSNS & IMF maintain personnel protection programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personnel protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of the medical surveillance programs, the incumbent will be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualifications and/or need for vaccination for duty involving work with these agents and/or possible contraction of disease.
