Duties

This position is within the Division of Facility Management and reports to the trails supervisor. Duties include: Personnel Management - supervise up to 10 employees directly, ranging from WG-3 laborers and WL-7 maintenance workers Financial Management- Maintains training and proper use of government travel and charge card. Tracks spending on project accounts. Project Management- Responsible for field supervision of up to 3 trails crews throughout 6 month field season. Coordinates logistics and develops weekly and daily work plans. Responsible for planning, developing, designing, and implementation of projects. Maintenance Duties- Execute, train and oversee all trail maintenance and building tasks. Perform and demonstrate relevant journeyman level skill in the field of general trail operation, construction, and maintenance. Safety and Risk Management Physical Demands: The position requires very strenuous effort in moving heavy materials to and at the job site. Employee must be able to hike steep trails in all weather conditions, carry heavy materials to the work site and work in difficult terrain. Employee routinely lifts and carries items over 50 pounds and occasionally over 100 pounds. Employee must be able to hike long distances daily (in excess of 15-20 miles) averaging 3 miles per hour with backpack and tools. Working Conditions: The work areas are on hiking trails often miles from the road and on narrow and steep terrain. The work takes place in hot, cold and rainy weather. The conditions are often hazardous and in remote locations where help is not readily available in the event of an accident. Employees are exposed to the possibility of falling up to hundreds of feet, pinching or crushing of hands and feet, bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes and the possibility of greater injury due to the equipment being used at this level. Employees are expected to follow safety precautions and use safety equipment such as gloves, ear protection, safety glasses, dust masks and leather boots to avoid the possibility of severe injuries.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following screen out job element: Ability to lead or supervise (SCREEN OUT) Applicants must show in their application package that they are able to lead or supervise others. Experience includes work such as: leading a trails program and operation and all associated programs; assisting with overall work planning assisting in establishing work schedules and priorities; assigning and reviewing trails work; assisting in the hiring process by reviewing applications, interviewing, checking references and making selections; assisting with performance management including performance appraisals and personnel conduct and performance; assisting with the planning, estimating, scheduling, tracking and executing of project work and reoccurring operational and maintenance activities; assisting with contracts involving journeyman level skills and inspecting work performed under contract or agreement for quantity, quality and compliance.
