This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: The Park Ranger performs assignments the require general knowledge of Resource Management programs such as recreation management, visitor assistance, forestry, fisheries and wildlife management, shoreline management, interpretation, and flood risk management.

Duties

Participate in the day-to-day operation of recreation areas by checking the areas for compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to parking, camping, noise level, sanitation, and safety. Patrol project lands and water to ensure compliance with Federal regulations. Assist with inspection of a variety of service contracts including maintenance (mowing, pruning), refuse removal, janitorial, boundary maintenance, law enforcement, etc. Aid in the administration of the shoreline management program. Participate in activities such as fish and wildlife surveys, habitat manipulation and development, forest inventories, mapping, firefighting (prevention, suppression, controlled burning). Develop interpretive programs by conducting research of topics using sources such as records, books, files, and interviews of people who have personal knowledge of a particular site or event when appropriate.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license.
  • Required to wear prescribed uniform as identified in regulation ER-1130-20-550.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license (within 3 years of start).
  • Incumbent is required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.).
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
  • Incumbent must possess or be able to acquire first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and blood-borne pathogen training.
  • During emergencies, the incumbent may be called on short notice.
  • Incumbent must receive a minimum of 24 hours of personal protection /unarmed self defense, situational evaluation, and tactical communication training within two years of employment.
  • Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes at least two of the following: working at a park visitor center; answering visitor questions pertaining to park rules, historical information, wildlife areas and/or fire safety; patrolling recreational areas to identify safety violations or possible hazards; conducting hikes and/or guided tours of recreational areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-04).
