About the Position: Serve as a Medical Records Technician (Coder), in the Patient Admin Department, within Naval Base Health Clinic Groton, Naval Base, CT. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized. Advance leave accrual may be authorized. This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD.

Duties

Assigns specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients. Considerable judgment is used to relate appropriate diagnosis and treatment procedures to interpret, analyze and select correct codes. Ensures compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements in utilizing theICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT, and HCPCS LEVEL II coding books. Performs quantitative analysis and checks medical record for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements. Identifies and documents any incident which may denote a potential compensatory event or questionable breach of quality of care delivered. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • Medical Coding Certification is not required, but highly desired.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experiments requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes intermediate knowledge of basic rules, procedures, and operations to compile and retrieve medical records information to code in medical record coding system, posses knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, anatomy, physiology, and disease. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as health information manaegement, healthcare administration, or business administration. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
