This position is part of the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). As a Instructor (Culinary Arts) you will be responsible providing college level instruction in the field of Culinary Arts to meet the education goals and objectives of SIPI.

Duties

As a Instructor (Culinary Arts) GS-1701-11, your typical work assignments may include the following: Teach Culinary Art courses, which include Baking and Pastry, Savory Cuisine, Nutrition, and Management courses, and other related classes or activities. Demonstrates and develop instructional skills that include the ability to teach and explain difficult concepts and to engage students that have different abilities and come from different cultural backgrounds in instructing the curriculum objectives. Participates in student recruitment and retention efforts. Develops, implements, and maintains academic records for instruction, including syllabi consistent with course and program objectives, student proficiencies and attendance. Possesses technical and academic writing skills for college-level documents such as reports and policies prepared for the College.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the qualification requirements contained in the OPM Standards. For this position, they are listed below. BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR INSTRUCTOR (CULINARY ARTS), GS-1701-11: Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in the subject-matter field of Culinary Arts/Management or in Food Science. OR Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in the above. In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications requirements below. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. GS-11: Applicant meets the basic education requirement and possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service that includes: serving as an Instructor of Culinary Arts in a college or equivalent adult education institution, which included teaching with full and primary responsibility for classroom instruction in the areas of cooking and baking principles, food preparation, menu planning, food safety/sanitation; and development or review of culinary training/course materials, preparing course syllabi and materials, labs and activities, delivering lectures and presentations and evaluating student progress. OR Applicant meets the basic education requirement and possess 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the field of Culinary Arts/Management or in Food Science. OR A combination of progressively higher-level graduate education and experience. When combining education with experience, first determine the total qualifying education as a percentage of education required for the grade level; then determine the experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; finally, add the two percentages. Total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for the grade level. Only experience and education obtained by the closing date of this announcement will be considered.
