About the Position: The Watervliet Arsenal is an Army-owned & operated manufacturing center located in New York. It is the oldest, continuously active arsenal in the United States having begun operations in 1813. Today it is relied upon by U.S. & foreign militaries to produce the most advanced, high-powered weaponry for cannon systems.
Duties
Serves as working leader of 3 or more employees in accomplishing trades and labor work.
Passes on to other workers instructions received from supervisor, and starts work (e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led).
Works along with other workers, setting the pace.
Determines acceptability on critically designed products such as multi lug light weight breech mechanisms, experimental composite materials used in light-weight gun barrels, electromagnetic cannon and liquid propellant firing systems.
Performs inspection/evaluation on prototype and conventional weapons returned from the field for a variety of reasons (modifications, condemnation, unusual wear patterns, etc.) to determine components integrity and prepares written reports.
Recommends repair and modifications to component parts and sub-assemblies to correct faulty components identified during inspection.
Ensures that all inspection equipment, tools, gages, etc. used for inspecting and testing purposes is properly calibrated and functionally accurate.
Requirements
- Position maybe filled as a time -limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade NTE 1 year by current Army employee.
- Time-limited appointments may be extended up to a maximum of 5 years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed 5 years, however return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health, ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees may be required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
- This position requires shift work.
- May be subject to one year trial/probationary period.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 44 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Machine Tool Work Inspector Leader without more than normal supervision.(1) Ability to lead others in performing inspections on a variety of manufacturing components and equipment; (2) Ability to inspect for non-compliance and/or non-conformance of specifications; and (3) Ability to utilize a variety of standard measuring equipment to verify accuracy of dimensions such as micrometers, height gages, and calipers.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires standing, stooping, bending, stretching and working in tiring and
uncomfortable positions. Required to lift/carry items weighing up to 44 lbs. Mechanical lifting devices/other
employees are available to assist with lift of 45 lbs. and over. Requires good vision to work to close
tolerances.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is generally done inside in areas that are air conditioned, well lighted,
heated, and ventilated or in machine shop areas. May work outside or in areas that are drafty, hot, poorly
lighted, noisy, and dirty. Subject to grease, coolants, and possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
