This vacancy is for an IT Specialist (System Admin) in the Office of the Secretary within the Department of Commerce.
Duties
As an IT Specialist (System Admin), you will perform the following duties:
Apply enterprise system life cycle methodology theories, concepts, and methods sufficient to install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain hardware and software to ensure systems and networks availability, functionality, integrity, security, and efficiency; Ensure the tools and methodologies implemented in the enterprise are adequately supporting the overall mission and goals.
Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the confidentiality, integrity and availability of hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs. As appropriate, troubleshoot system related issues to determine if problem(s) exist in hardware or software and take approval action to remedy.
Participate in all phases of projects, including advising on specification requirements and limitations, assisting project managers define the problem(s) to be solved, providing input into potential solutions or technologies, working with vendors and/or Federal colleagues to implement solutions or technologies, and providing operations and maintenance support.
Assess the technical environment to provide recommendations for senior and executive management on improving efficiency and scalability of operations; Ensure system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to DOC standards.
Conduct technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure; research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage resources and provide economies of scale.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as:
Managing enterprise system life cycles;
Installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining hardware and software;
Performing daily system monitoring; and
Developing standard operating procedures and frequently asked questions relevant to the systems.
