The primary purpose of this position is: Represents the group authority for safe execution of all 53d Weapons Evaluation Group (53d WEG) live fire operations over the Gulf of Mexico Range to include USAF Weapon Systems Evaluation Program (WSEP) and Joint air-to-air missile developmental and operational test live fire events.
Duties
Performs as Range Safety Officer (RSO) responsible for ensuring that favorable conditions exists for the safe firing of live missiles and safe command destruct of air-to-air missiles in support of Weapons System Evaluation Program (WSEP).
Performs as Range Destruct Officer during live five missions.
Responsible for reporting Range Safety violations and performing/reporting trend analysis.
Collaborate with WEG Range Safety team and various installation and functional area organizations (Center, Wing, and Group Level) to implement the WEG Range Safety Program.

- Significant experience with air-to-air weapons employment, control, and safety required.
- Previous or current qualification as an air-to-air range safety officer or weapons controller highly desired.
- Must have normal sight, color vision, and hearing in both ears. Manual dexterity in order to perceive events in a multi-sensory input environment.
- Must be able to utilize foot pedals, headsets with separate left and right ear inputs, and operates a computer display with keyboard.
- Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
- The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate driver’s license may be required for the position.
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI security clearance.
- Mission requirements will occasionally to frequently dictate that duties be performed outside of normal work hours.

This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Positions- Miscellaneous Administration & Program (0301).
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes In-depth knowledge of military training range policies, directives, instructions, and procedures that govern the safe operation of ranges, training areas, and airspace and its correlation to aircrew training, weapons, lasers, ammunition, and training facilities to safely conduct air-to-air missile developmental and operational test live fire events; Extensive knowledge of military tactics, training, and doctrine to include joint task force levels to advise commanders and management officials on the execution of training plans within the constraints of range facilities and boundaries; In-depth knowledge of range safety instructions and regulations, orders, policies, surface danger zone and weapons danger zone tables, and technical manuals of weapons systems; and skill in applying these references in order to determine specific safety data for utilizing a wide variety of ordnance and weapon systems.

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy oftranscripts.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-09 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Specialized knowledge of fighter aircraft air-to-air operations, safety parameters, and ordnance to include their capabilities and limitations.
Knowledge of remote piloted vehicles utilized as drone targets for live missile fire, their capabilities, limitations, and survivability requirements.
Knowledge of flight termination systems as applied to drones and missiles.
Knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, policies, and precedents, which effect the Range Safety program and the skill in analytical techniques to make risk assessment and mitigation plans; Skill to coordinate in-flight delivery procedures and flight data transmission, monitor altitude, airspeed and position data, read and interpret radar displays, and perform effective air-to-air communication.
Ability to apply sound judgment skills and be decisive and assertive in acting upon said judgment within a highly dynamic and stressful mission environment; Ability to interpret, analyze, and think in a three-dimensional airspace and knowledge of radar principles, system operations, and air space management.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
