Three positions are located in the Pacific West Region, two positions will be filled at Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one position will be filled at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. One position is located in the Pacific Northwest Region at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.

Duties
Golden Gate National Recreation Area
Carries out all the full scope of supervisory responsibilities and creates a culture of teamwork and inclusion.
Manage, direct, and evaluate Outreach and Volunteer programs to include work planning and operations.
Skill in interpretive methods and techniques.
Skill in training and coaching in interpretive methods and techniques.
Experience with outreach, volunteer program management, partnership and community engagement
Maintain cooperative working relationships within the park and with other organizations and agencies.
Golden Gate National Recreation Area was established in 1972 and is one of the most visited and complex units of the national park systems with approximately 15-17 million visitors per year.
The park encompasses approximately 80,000 acres of land and water, including 91 miles of bay and ocean shoreline across San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin Counties. Muir Woods National Monument and Fort Point National Historic Site are separate units of the NPS administered as part of Golden Gate. The park contains a rich diversity of both natural and cultural resources. It is part of a global biodiversity hotspot with dozens of threatened and endangered species, thousands of plant and animal species and a wide variety of habitat types as well as shorelines and marine areas.
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area
Provide overall supervision and program management of the park's interpretation, education, and volunteer programs.
Maintain cooperative working relationships within the park and with other organizations and agencies.
Plans and coordinates a wide range of public programs throughout the year. Programs consist of walks, talks, and evening programs on different natural, cultural, and historical topics.
Oversees an active curriculum-based education program.
Oversees all planning, development, maintenance, repair/rehabilitation, and replacement of interpretive media.
Continuously evaluates programs for opportunities for improvement, conducts strategic planning, and develops training and communication tools to implement changes.
Carries out the full scope of supervisory and personnel management responsibilities for a diverse staff and creates a culture of teamwork and inclusion.
The park preserves a Mediterranean ecosystem and offers easy access to surprisingly wild places with impressive biodiversity.
The only park in the System that tells the story of the American movie industry, Santa Monica Mountains is home to Paramount Ranch. Owned and operated by Paramount Studios from 1927-1942, more than 130 movies were made at the Ranch. Today, the Ranch is part of the park and provides unique interpretive, education, and community event opportunities to the public. The park is near world class beaches and entertainment.
Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Alcatraz Island
Carries out the full scope of supervisory and personnel management responsibilities and creates a culture of teamwork and inclusion.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with culturally diverse staff, cooperating association, concessionaires and park partners, government agencies and other divisions.
Oversees the design, development, and implementation of new and innovative interpretative programs for the park crafted for a diverse public audience and achieve the goals of the park.
Train, mentor, coach, and evaluate interpretive programs and products created by fellow staff or volunteers.

Crater of the Moon and Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument
Provides overall direction, review, planning, coordination, and execution of all interpretive and community engagement services for the Park.
Represents the Park in negotiations and discussions with cooperating associations, partners, other federal offices, education institutions, private organizations, and professional associations.
Applies leadership philosophies and skills, small group dynamics and/or interpersonal communication knowledge in the course of training, coaching and mentoring.
Establish and implement goals including selecting projects, developing deadlines, and applying resources.
Serves as the Chief of Interpretation and Education for two NPS units in the Pacific West Region: Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve and Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument. Combined, the units contain a remarkable variety of nationally significant cultural and natural resources.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/22/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualification requirement by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: professional experience in interpretation and education functions such as ranger led programs, creating publications, website contributions, social media and video development targeting various in-person and remote audiences; fostering relations and communications with diverse groups; coaching, mentoring and training employees to deliver natural and cultural resource information to various diverse audiences. You must include the number of hours worked per week on your resume.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Golden Gate National Recreation Area:
Physical Demands: Incumbent spends 75% of time in-doors and 25% outside. Duties require frequent trips to various park units or surrounding communities for project coordination, meetings and critique of interpretive efforts. Special events and interpretive programs may require long periods of standing and walking on hard surfaces. The climate is moderate. Local travel is required as well as some regional and national travel.
Work Environment: Work is often performed in an office setting, but there is regular exposure to the outdoor park environment. Some travel may be required.
Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Alcatraz Island:
Physical Demands: Duties and responsibilities require some ten-hour workdays. Assignments include extended periods of standing at information desks, walking uphill and downhill equivalent to thirteen stories on uneven surface and in variable weather speaking for long periods, lifting, bending, sitting, and working at a computer workstation. The duties of the position may require considerable physical exertion, especially during emergencies.
Work Environment: Work is done both an office setting which is climate controlled year-round and outdoors. Most interpretive programs are presented outdoors and include a steep climb up hill and steep and narrow stairs. Weather varies but often foggy and windy. The work is performed for 40 hours per week with variable shifts during the summer. Work includes weekdays, weekends, holidays and some evenings. Travel to the island is via ferry and to the headquarters office via car, bus or bike.
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area:
Physical Demands: The position involves a combination of office and fieldwork that entails walking, driving, bending, sitting, and standing. In addition, fieldwork may require hiking on established trails. Office work is done at a desk with little physical exertion.
Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting, classroom, in the field, on trails, and in remote backcountry settings. Incumbent may be required to work weekends and holidays during various times of the year
Craters of the Moon National Monument and Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument:
Physical Demands: Most work is completed at a desk; however, assignments regularly involve long periods of standing, bending, and stooping to observe and study work operations.
Work Environment: Significant work time is spent in an indoor office setting; however, assignments regularly require visits to field areas and involve risks or discomfort protective clothing and gear, and observance of safety precautions are sometimes required.
