Serves as a supervisory AST in Aerospace Materials (Deputy Branch Chief) for the High Temperature and Smart Alloys Branch within the Materials and Structures Division. You will be responsible for technical and supervisory leadership of a team of researchers and engineers delivering metallic materials technology to missions, conducting analytical investigations of a wide range of aerospace materials, and providing materials and processes engineering for flight projects.

Duties

Provides administrative and technical supervision of the High Temperature and Smart Alloys Branch. Oversees, evaluates and contributes to: alloy research and development; analysis of aerospace materials; and materials and processes engineering. Advocates for resources and identifies strategic objectives for the branch in the following areas: high temperature alloys, alloys for functional applications, analytical sciences, and materials processes engineering. Recommends employees for promotions and recognition. Provides equal employment opportunity. Maintains a culture of diversity and inclusion in all branch activities. Reviews employee performance. Performs fundamental or applied research which provides strategic scientific and technical guidance in novel aerospace materials including refractory metal, shape memory, high-temperature structural, soft magnetic material, and amorphous alloys. Communicates with project management as a technical team lead, advocate for projects/new work, build partnerships and relationships, disseminate technical results orally in presentations and meetings, and in technical documents and program reports. Serves as back-up technical authority for GRC’s Materials and Processes discipline. Serve as subject matter expert for technical reviews. Excel at critical thinking, problem solving, and communication. Perform a full range of supervisory duties which includes assigning and evaluating work; recommending personnel actions; taking disciplinary actions; and identifying training needs and developing employees. Requirements

  • Current Federal employees must meet qualifications, time in grade, and 90 days after competitive appointment requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. GS-14: To qualify at the GS-14 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Leading technical research, development, or application for aerospace material(s) technology; Presenting research, development, or application results for aerospace materials to technical and/or project leaders; Evaluating and implementing strategies for advancing the state of the art in materials for aerospace applications. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
