Serves as a Research Materials Engineer AST in Aerospace Materials for the High Temperature and Smart Alloys Branch within the Materials and Structures Division in the role of Analytical Sciences Group Technical Lead. You will be responsible for technical and administrative leadership of a team conducting analytical investigations of a wide range of aerospace materials. You also will be responsible for conducting research and failure analysis of a variety of materials.
Duties
Provides administrative and technical supervision of Analytical Science Group (ASG) within High Temperature and Smart Alloys Branch. Manages laboratory operation, maintains equipment, coordinates personnel activity, and oversees laboratory budget.
Oversees and advocates for the ASG organization including: 1) Metallurgical and Optical Characterization, 2) Electron Optics, 3) X-ray Diffraction, 4) Analytical Chemistry and Thermal Analysis, and 5) Non-Destructive Evaluation.
Communicates with principal investigators and project managers as a technical team lead. Advocates for projects/new work and builds partnerships/relationships.
Performs fundamental or applied research in alignment with ASG technical activities and High Temperature and Smart Alloys Branch activities for materials engineering and research.
Disseminates oral technical results in presentations and meetings. Disseminates written technical results in documents and program reports.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. Please keep this in mind when indicating the lowest grade, you will accept.
GS-14: To qualify at the GS-14 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level:
Performing research and/or engineering evaluation in advanced materials including experience in one or more of the following: 1) Metallurgical and Optical Characterization, 2) Electron Optics, 3) X-ray Diffraction, 4) Analytical Chemistry and Thermal Analysis, and 5) Non-Destructive Evaluation;
Leading technical or project teams performing engineering, research, and/or development activities in the fields of materials or structures;
Communicating work to technical teams and/or project leaders.

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are
not considered qualifying for this position.
