Incumbent works in the Commander, Navy Region, Southwest (CNRSW) Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Program under the general supervision of the designated manager. Incumbent is responsible for the management, supervision, design, administration, operation, and technical direction of a fitness facility and the fitness program within the Southwest Region.

Duties

Plans, organizes, and conducts a physical fitness program that provides conditioning programs for authorized patrons. Instructs individuals and groups in the proper implementation and maintenance of conditioning and training programs for aerobic fitness, muscular fitness, body composition, and flexibility training. Conducts micro-fit testing, which includes measuring individuals' aerobic capacities, their body fat percentage, recommended height/weight ratios, strength, flexibility, muscular endurance and blood pressure. Works with various command representatives in developing and implementing physical fitness programs for military personnel. Instructs patrons in the proper use of all equipment for training and self-monitored progress by preparing written instruction and procedures for the performance of work, use of equipment, safety and well-being of all involved. May train/lead other employees in various recreation/physical fitness-related positions. Registers students, collects fees, maintains attendance and appropriate accounting records. Ensures all safety measures are observed. Responsible for care of equipment and security of facilities. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background Investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
  • The work requires standing, sitting, walking and lifting 50 pounds or more while performing duties.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid certification is required.
  • Certification from a nationally recognized agency in the area of exercise science or be able to obtain certification within 90 days of employment.

Qualifications

Knowledge of various strength training machines and cardiovascular fitness equipment. Ability and knowledge to perform minor repairs and maintenance of exercise equipment. Experience with exercise physiology, exercise prescription for apparently healthy populations and for individuals with physical problems/conditions (hypertension, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, pulmonary restrictions, musculoskeletal problems, chronic back pain and pregnancy), exercise and medication interactions, electrocardiography, kinesiology, anatomy and nutrition. Experience with conducting graded exercise test on a stationary bike or treadmill with an electrocardiogram (EKG), performing body composition, lung function, flexibility, blood cholesterol and strength assessments. Experience with counseling individuals on their results and recommending fitness and lifestyle changes to make healthful changes. Must be able to identify disease-related risk factors and be capable of assisting individuals with risk factor modification through exercise, diet, stress management, and other lifestyle changes. Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of all programs and to make recommendations for improving or correcting them. Ability to develop and customize presentations and address groups. Ability to speak to individuals/groups regarding fitness and lifestyle modification is required. Ability to maintain records and reports, follow verbal and written instructions, and communicate effectively with others.

Education

  • Nationally recognized fitness certification is required.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid is required.
