The Lead Motor Vehicle Operator position is located in the Facilities Maintenance Service Line in the Department of Veterans Affairs at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System.

Duties

The Lead MVO-Passes on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started and assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group they lead and working along with other workers and setting the pace for completion of duties. Duties also include, but are not limited to the following: Responsible to schedule all training for shop employees and to maintain individual training records for assigned employees according to policy and procedures. Incumbent will maintain and provide a current training and leave roster to the MVO/Grounds Shop Required to have Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) training and certification to assist in creating/updating service and preventive maintenance contracts. Responsible for routine- tasks which include checking inventory of shop supplies and materials to ensure that proper quantity is on hand at all times; ordering needed equipment, parts and supplies to complete repairs; assigning work orders; inspection of equipment, equipment rooms, work areas, cleanliness and safety. Assume responsibilities as assigned during those periods when the Supervisor is not present (available) or on duty. Responsible for providing and operating passenger buses, front-end loaders with 3.5 cubic yard bucket, skid steers and associated attachments, street sweepers, vehicles, tractors, trucks, power equipment, snow removal equipment and all other grounds maintenance equipment and related services. Performs preventive maintenance on VA and GSA equipment such as checking oil, tires, batteries, solutions, cooling systems, fan belts or other noticeable leaks in transmissions, differentials, etc.; and sees that repairs are made. Responsible for reporting defective tools and equipment to' supervisor for necessary repairs. Incumbent operates equipment properly so that repairs are kept to a minimum Answering questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems (for example, concerning, additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees). Work Schedule: 40 Hours a week, Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm, EST. In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. Veterans' preference does not apply for internal or other current permanent Federal agency employees.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The daily duties performed by the incumbent are mostly sedentary. However, the position also involves duties consisting of climbing in and out of vehicles, moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on or in to load or tie down cargo. Incumbent works in all weather conditions, lifting heavy freight equipment, supplies, etc. Incumbent very often lifts weights of approximately 45 lbs. and at times 75 lbs. to 100 lbs. The work requires standing, stooping, kneeling and climbing and driving long hours.
