The VA Connecticut Healthcare System is seeking a full-time Motor Vehicle Operator. This position will operate within the Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) program. This position is located within the Patient Transportation Department, located in the Health Administration Service of the Business Office. The Motor Vehicle Operator will provide transportation to Veterans of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System. Selectee must have a valid unrestricted driving license.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Drives one or more types of passenger vehicles, which can carry up to 8 or more passengers. Drives predetermined and/or scheduled routes or special runs. Provides non-emergent, safe transportation of eligible veterans and cargo. Operates and provides preventive maintenance of patient transport vehicles and performs daily inspection of vehicle. Incumbent is the first contact with the Veterans and is responsible for making a positive impression. Incumbent maintains a daily manifest of Veterans transported via the Patient Transportation Department. Incumbent is responsible to insure Veterans and their caregivers are transported to and from their scheduled destination in a safe and timely manner. Enforces passenger seatbelt use. Proceeds only to designated areas; cooperates in a coordinated, constantly flowing effort. Vehicles driven include vehicles equipped with special purpose power equipment and levers, buttons, pedals, etc,. control equipment (e.g. wheel chair lifts). Skilled in driving the vehicle in carious road and weather conditions to safely transport patients to their destination and know how to properly load and secure wheelchair patients in the vehicle. Must have knowledge of vehicles equipped with special-purpose accessory equipment. Know how to use the power devices that operate van lifts and skill in manipulating a variety of controls and understanding equipment gauges, engine fluid level instruments and warning signals. Listens to concerns and provides the customer with information needed or points them in the right direction for assistance. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 11:00 am - 7:30 pm Compressed/Flexible Schedule: Not Authorized. This position is in the Competitive Service. Selectee must have a safe driving record. Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Considerable physical efforts may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways. Patient transport vehicle driver must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping, bending, and lifting of patients. Driver must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often with no assistance. Employee works mostly outside, is exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts and bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. Operates vehicle in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent), and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Employee will drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.
