This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. Incumbent performs non-professional, quasi-professional, and technical work that supports access to archival holdings and physical and intellectual control over records. The work encompasses the full range of archival support services to include reference, researcher assistance and other customer services, archival processing, accessioning, disposal, preserving, digitizing, and reformatting of records.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an ARCHIVES TECHNICIAN, you will:
Provide written and oral "first-line" reference assistance and consultation, respond to all forms of inquiry concerning NARA's broad range of archival holdings using complex finding aid systems and related archival sources, in both electronic and analog formats.
Review information about records prior to making them available to researchers, ensuring that access restrictions are being followed.
Perform detailed and complex arrangement work following a plan (or general guidance) approved by supervisor or team leader.
Prepare online catalog descriptions of holdings at all levels according to NARA lifecycle standards, policies, and procedures. Create technical and descriptive metadata.
Independently evaluate the physical condition of records in the course of other duties and alerts supervisor or other designated staff to condition problems that limit access or threaten the safety of records.
Greet visitors and researchers; assist with research room registration; provide presentations to the research public on standard research methodology for self-service collections and/or the handling and use of archival holdings and equipment on an individual basis or in groups, as required; and direct researchers to appropriate NARA resources as necessary
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience for the GS-06 grade level is defined as one year of experience at the GS-05 grade level, or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and which equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience:
Experience communicating with customers and responding to inquiries, verbally and/or in writing. AND
Experience referencing, and/or following and applying policy and procedures to accomplish work assignments. AND
Experience performing research to identify information relevant to a work assignment.
Specialized Experience for the GS-05 grade level is defined as one year of experience at the GS-04 grade level, or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and which equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience:
Experience communicating with customers and responding to inquiries, verbally or in writing. AND
Experience following and referencing policy and procedures.
OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.
NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
For the GS-06, you must have been at the GS-05 level for 52 weeks.
Advancement to positions up to GS-5: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-05 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.
Education
Education Requirements: The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
