The Mail Clerk is responsible for the performance of a variety of administrative, computer based programs, and physical duties concerning the incoming and outgoing mail processing, files maintenance, digital computer-based mail equipment operation, sophisticated multi-function state of the art high volume digital reproduction/finishing equipment operation, handling of hazardous and perishable items, and includes pick up and delivery of mail to several on-site and off-site locations.
Duties
Duties includes:
Pick-up, delivery, and research of "Confidential", "Time Sensitive", "Official" and inter-office mail (HIPAA/PHI/PII).
Ensures that all incoming public inquiries, (Legal/Congressional) mail is properly opened, logged, read, date stamped, sorted and delivered immediately to the appropriate Admin Officer or Supervisor.
Processes thousands of pieces of mail and packages weekly from multiple locations throughout the facility and off-site locations.
Pick-up and deliver mail to several on-site and off-site locations.
Receives, picks-up, processes, sorts, distributes, and researches "critical", Time Sensitive", incoming and outgoing "Official/Inter-Office/ Accountable" HIPAA related mail.
Conducts quality control procedures by ensuring that all outgoing mail (letters and packages) are metered with the proper date, postage, complete.
Sets up, operates, adjusts, and monitors the operation of single or multiple function equipment such as copiers, duplicators, mail processing machines, etc.
Sets up, operates and adjusts the largest, most advanced duplicating equipment with an on-line sorter, to reproduce supplies, clearing paper jams, cleaning and informing the supervisor of machine breakdowns and operation problems.
Operates a variety of equipment to reproduce material s, fold, insert and seal for mailing.
Coordinates all aspects of processing and completing reproduction requests.
Logs in and assigns job numbers to approved reproduction requests.
Determines the layout of an item, determines typefaces to use and the mode of duplication most appropriate and economical for the request.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday;7:30am-4:00pm , subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
General Experience: You must have one year of general experience, equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to this Mail Clerk position to be filled. General experience includes:
Maintain records and sorts mail received from the post office;
Assess all outgoing mail for proper addressing and packaging,
Return mail to services and/or sender when mail is not properly addressed when received;
Inspects packages for damage or potential threats and taking appropriate action;
Establishes priorities and accomplish day to day goals;
Utilizes customer service skills with every interaction.
OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Successfully completed two (2) years of education above the high school in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED).
OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have combinations of successfully completed 1 year above high school education and general experience to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-4 level. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

Physical Requirements: The work requires some physical exertion such as extended periods of standing, frequent bending, reaching, stooping or similar activities necessary to set up, operate, adjust and monitor the operation of the equipment. The employee lifts, on a recurring basis, a variety of moderately heavy materials and supplies. Occasionally the employee may be required to lift heavy (over 50 pounds) items such as mailbags or large stacks of paper stock. Employee may walk long distances pushing/pulling mail carts or delivering express mail. Carts, bags and trays may need to be physically loaded into a vehicle for delivery to CBOCs.
