This position is located within the Business Office at the Shreveport VA Medical Center in Shreveport, LA. The position will serve as a File Clerk - Scanning Specialist in the Medical Records File Unit of Health Information Management Section, Central Business Office.
Duties

The major duties include but are not limited to:
Receives, indexes, scans and assigns appropriate nomenclature to health and administrative information, as assigned, for incorporation into the correct patient's record in the computerized patient records system (CPRS);
Performs filing of paper health and administrative documents;
Retrieves and delivers records or documents upon request from persons having right of access;
Requests from and transfers records to other medical facilities;
Identifies and prepares records for retention and disposition;
Treats patients, co-workers and personnel with courtesy and respect;
Fully protects the confidentiality of patient information, access to computer files and release of access codes, according to established guidelines and procedures;
Employs a cooperative attitude in interaction with co-workers and supervisors. Regularly assists other cop-workers when needs arise;
Performs clerical duties, including, the use of computerized records tracking, associated with retention, maintenance, disposition, and control of administrative and medical records;
Routinely transfers or prepares for archiving records of patients not receiving medical care within a three-year period; and
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position at the GS-4 level, you must meet one of the following:
Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of general experience in a position that was progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates your ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the File Clerk - Scanning Specialist position. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~
Education: Successfully completed two (2) years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the first year) and general experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work with computers is mainly sedentary in an office environment. However, paper records retrieval, filing and management involves long hours of standing, with extensive bending, reaching, lifting, stooping, pulling, and other physical exertion or strain. Some work will be performed in a warehouse setting and requires packing boxes (whose weight will typically exceed 20 pounds) and otherwise preparing records for shipment.
