This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
Maintain Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer (NMR) for use by Chemical Science Division and other collaborating groups. Evaluate purity and stability of pure and matrix compounds by NMR, Liquid Chromatography (LC), Gas Chromatography (GC), and other instrumental methods as necessary. Serve as a technical project leader for reference materials including: developing materials, leading packaging, sampling plans, communicating with statisticians and the office of reference materials, writing reports of analysis, certificates of analysis, and reference material information sheets. Produce data for materials with traceability to the SI. Communicate and collaborate with team members, other NIST teams, and external teams. Present and publish results as appropriate.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that includes 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: Course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
IN ADDITION: To qualify, applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level (ZP-II for NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience in quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. Measurement of individual chemical compounds in complex botanical matrices. Experience with performing international intercomparison exercises including those from CCQM.
OR
Master's or equivalent graduate degree in related field.
OR
A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
