You will serve as a PARALEGAL SPECIALIST in the Office of the General Counsel of COMMANDER NAVY REGION HAWAII.

Duties

You will employ legal procedures and practices in preparing for litigation to ensure complete and accurate filings. You will analyze grievances and complaints relative to facts, issues, and applicable policy to develop conclusion and recommendation. You will brief management on the status of all pending legal actions or investigations to ensure they are well versed on all matters that may require higher level review. You will identify and locate reports, instructions, regulations, statues, and law books from the law library and electronic search engines. You will perform extensive and thorough legal research into the legislative history, precedent cases, decisions, and opinions that may be applicable to particular legal matters. You will prepare standard legal documents, forms, and routine correspondence for the command.

  • Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level. This requirement is called time-in-grade. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Providing legal advice and administrative support in matters of military justice administration and law; 2) Analyzing and evaluating legal inquires to determine need for additional information, documentary evidence and procedural guidelines; 3) Assisting attorneys in case preparation by assisting in the review of investigations and performing legal research; 4) Preparing and presenting briefs, affidavits and specialized legal documents. Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

Successful completed of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR
Successful completion three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree OR
Successful completion of an LL.M. degree that is related to the position being filled.
