About the Position: The incumbent serves as a Lead Security Guard at the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fort Knox, Kentucky. KEY POSITION: Civilians in Key positions must be exempted from recall to active duty because of Reserve or retired military obligations.

Duties

Assure the timely accomplishment of security and related inspection work. Check work progress and make day-to-day adjustments based on work priorities. Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and provide on-the-job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures. Answer questions of employees on procedures and regulatory directives and obtain decisions and information on problems. Conduct control point/entry duties, to include control point vetting and vehicle searches. Perform 100% ID check of all personnel attempting to access the installation. Prevent unauthorized or inadvertent entry into limited and exclusion areas. Conduct basic and refresher security guard training through classroom presentations and practical exercises. Conduct training exercises in the use and functions of all firearms available and used by the guard force to include a variety of weapons and the actual qualification firing of all members. Evaluate performance of members to determine effectiveness of training and provide advice and assistance to improve performance.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must obtain a favorable Tier 3 investigation.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and sustain state certification for operating the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) terminals.
  • In accordance with AR 190-56, requirements of Individual Reliability Program apply.
  • Condition of Employment must be assigned for mandatory drug testing. Drug testing designated position. Individual agrees to submit to a urinalysis on a recurring basis
  • Shift work is required, or a change in work shift may be necessary. Hours of work encompass fluctuating tours of duty to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Overtime may be required as directed and is subject to recall for periods of emergency overtime.
  • Incumbent must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
  • Incumbent must undergo and pass annual medical exams of physical, emotional and mental stability
  • Incumbent must successfully complete security guard training.
  • Incumbent must be trained and maintain current required certifications in CPR techniques and must know first aid. May act as a first responder in a medical emergency.
  • Incumbent may be required to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment, and may be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
  • Incumbent will be required to maintain physical conditioning and pass an annual physical agility test (PAT). Failure to meet the standards after the second attempt within a ninety-day period will result in separation.
  • Incumbent must be fully qualified to operate a government vehicle. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license. Loss of license may result in removal from the position.
  • Incumbent must wear the Department of the Army Security Guard (DASG) uniform and maintain a high state of appearance and hygiene.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain applicable certifications in operating various electronic equipment and sensors.
  • Incumbent must not have any medical condition that precludes the wearing of a chemical protective mask and over garments.
  • Incumbent must be able to perform as a member of the installation’s overall security response capability.
  • The duties and training required require for the employee to carry and deploy a riot baton, carry a protective shield and employ non-lethal ammunitions if necessary.
  • Must meet the requirements under the Lautenberg Amendment/Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to Veterans preference so long as such applicants are available for appointment. If there are no Veterans preference eligibles available, non preference applicants may be considered. In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Controlling access of vehicles, visitors and pedestrians and using automated systems to query and verify suitability for visitor entry; working with federal, state, municipal, local or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident or trespass; OR maintaining order and protecting life. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-06).
