You will serve as a AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in the Public Works Department of NAVAL FACILITIES ENG COMMAND HAWAII.

Duties

You will inspect heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment to verify the equipment and component parts are maintained in a safe and serviceable condition. You will test for refrigerant leaks and use a refrigerant recovery/ recycling station, to Environmental Protection Agency standards to safely reclaim, recycle and store the refrigerant before repairs can be made. You will calculate airflow and the pressure-temperature characteristics for the different systems to locate problem. You will perform maintenance, calibration, modification, installation, repair and replacement of analog and direct digital controls (DDC) systems and equipment. You will dismantle, repair and reassemble units such as pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receivers, and evaporators. You will conduct visual and audible examination of equipment components by applying prescribed test procedures and equipment to determine probable causes for equipment failure.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current CPR certification.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position.

Qualifications

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: You must possess the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 certification exam (Universal) as a pre-qualification for this wage grade. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Diagnose, locate and repair malfunctions to the main operating mechanical components of large, industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems; 2) Calculate airflow and the pressure-temperature characteristics for the different complex systems to locate a problem; 3) Conduct visual and audible examination of equipment components by applying prescribed test procedures and equipment; and 4) Determine the best method for correcting malfunctions to HVAC systems. WG 08: This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Plan testing procedures, determine the proper kind and type of parts, tools and equipment necessary to install and repair a variety of systems 2) Disassemble and repair compressors and related components of air conditioning systems; 3) Determine the best method for correcting malfunctions to HVAC systems; and 4) Use all trade tools, test equipment, and instruments including voltage, amperage, ohm meters, refrigerant leak detectors, electronic temperature gauges, etc. applicable to the trade.
