This is a Term appointment NTE 13 months. It may be extended up to eight years but will not be made permanent.
Duties
Serves as a firefighter protecting life and property.
Performs standardized emergency medical procedures for critical, seriously ill, and acutely ill patients.
Acts as first responder to medical emergencies.
Evaluates changing conditions in fire, medical or hazardous material emergencies to alter procedures appropriately.
Performs fire protection inspections in areas where no unusual fire hazards are expected and the potential severity is low.
Inspects quarters and barracks, office buildings, health clinic, warehouses, etc. for fire hazards.
Operates radios, alarm room equipment, and fires reporting facilities.
Maintains firefighting apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
Requirements
- Must obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain a current a valid state driving permit.
- TDY up to 5% is required.
- A valid state-issued driver's license is required.
- This is a drug testing position. Incumbent is required to complete a drug test prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
- This position requires a pre-employment physical examination and an annual medical examination following appointment, to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- This position requires shift work: 48 hours on duty, 72 hours off duty.
- This position requires maintaining all physical fitness requirements as directed by current regulatory guidance.
- This position requires working outside in inclement weather, fire hazardous duty, and other emergency operations at all hours of the day.
- This position requires the use of personal protective equipment as appropriate and complies with safety and health directives (OSHA).
- This position requires heavy physical effort in the handling of objects such as cylinders, extinguishers weighing 45 lbs. or more; may be required to lift/carry personnel such as an adult male in emergency situations.
- Required to participate in Chemical Accident/Incident Response and Assistance (CAIRA) situations and serve on teams dedicated to controlling CAIRA situations after being trained for particular duty involved.
- Position designated as mission essential.
- Must be willing to accept a term position and serve a one year trial period.

In order to qualify, you must meet the exerienc requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1. Protecting life and property as a trained firefighter; 2. Using firefighting equipment to extinguish fires; and 3. Mitigating hazardous materials incidents through preventative maintenance and inspections of equipment and facilities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1. Protecting life and property as a trained firefighter; 2. Responding to fires using firefighting and rescue equipment and extinguishing agents; 3. Operating motorized firefighting equipment; 4. Containing hazards by building ventilation or extinguishing fires and; 5. Providing emergency medical services as a non-medical professional such as a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician or an IFSAC certified Hazardous Materials Technician. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
In addition to the experience stated above, to be qualified you must provide proof of the following certifications:
GS-06: Firefighter I & II certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board).
GS-07: Firefighter I & II certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) and a a State or National Registry EMT (NREMT) License.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
