About the Position: Receives general assignments from the on-duty supervisory firefighter regarding schedules, daily activities, and operations to be carried out. Works within parameters of departmental procedures utilizing techniques, manpower, equipment and materials necessary to carry out these assignments.
Special Retirement Coverage: This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.
Duties
Respond to fire alarms, EMS, incidents, combats fires, and rescues personnel requiring hazardous materials, and brush areas.
Respond on and off site to accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness and sometimes encounters situations which may be life threatening.
Direct and leads a crew of firefighter/EMT's.
Responsible for (one to Four) major pieces of firefighting/EMS apparatus, the maintenance of firefighting EMS vehicles and related equipment, and the work associated with three fire stations.
Maintain knowledge of all fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems and assigns crew members to station maintenance work such as cleaning equipment, fire station grounds, hose maintenance etc.
Respond and directs assigned crew members during responses to fires (aircraft, brush, explosives and structural); hazardous spills/leaks as directed; emergency medical incidents; mutual aid emergencies; and performs technical rescues.
Determines the nature and seriousness of the patient condition by performing the initial and on-going focused patient assessment and physical examination including the search for Medical Alert Signs.
Determine the patient's condition, if and how he/she can be moved and to which medical facility he/she should be transported.
Employ a variety of established emergency medical techniques, methods, and equipment to stabilize the patient before transporting to a Health Care facility.
Maintain records, manning reports, incident summaries, ensures Apparatus Electrical Load Test, Pump Flush, Apparatus Vacuum Test, Ladder Test, and Apparatus Hose Reload is accomplished.
Maintain current information such as blocked streets out of service hydrants, fire alarm systems and other operations data pertinent to guidance of assigned equipment and crews.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. The incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R (Condition of Employment for Certain Positions Identified as Critical Under the Drug Abuse Testing Program).
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position requires working outside in inclement weather, fire hazardous duty, and other emergency operations at all hours of the day.
- This position requires maintaining all physical fitness requirements as directed by current regulatory guidance.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Must possess and maintain Department of Defense (DoD) Certification (or equivalent) for the following: Firefighter II, Fire Officer II, Fire Inspector I, Fire Instructor I.
- Must possess and maintain DoD Certification (or equivalent) for the following: Hazmat Incident Commander, Hazardous Materials Awareness, and Hazardous Materials Operations.
- Must possess and maintain DoD Certification for the following: International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications system (PRO-Board) IAW DoD 6055.06-M.
- Must possess and maintain DoD Certification for the following: National Registry EMT-B based upon the DOT National Standard.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.
Specialized and Other Experience: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents; and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess and maintain Department of Defense (DoD) Certifications (or equivalent) for the following:
