The primary purpose of this position is to perform Utility System Repairs for the medical center. This position is located in the Maintenance and Repair Section of Engineering Service at the Amarillo VA Health Care System, in Amarillo, Texas.

Duties

The Utility Systems Repairer-Operator works in both the Boiler and the Chiller Plants performing operation, maintenance, and repair of four high pressure boilers, and three centrifugal chillers, etc. Boiler Plant operations, repair and maintenance duties include checking the control panels for the Boiler systems. Control panels control natural gas pressure, fuel oil pressure, incoming domestic water pressure, and steam pressure. Incumbent ensures temperature and humidity are controlled within tolerances through the building automation program by making computer adjustments. Incumbent checks operating equipment in Boiler plant, hourly; monitors the fire alarm system; medical gas alarm panel; elevator emergency call systems; and checkpoint monitors for temperature and humidity. Incumbent repacks and replaces pumps, valves, greasing oil pumps, valves and control linkages. In operating the equipment, the incumbent initiates the regeneration of water softeners when tests indicate hardness in the water. Installs, Maintains and Repairs Equipment Systems Boiler plant operations, repair and maintenance: Operates boiler plant with capacity of10,000 to 25,000 pounds of steam per hour. Performs the operation and operational maintenance of gas, and fuel oil fired power boilers and auxiliary equipment with manual or automatic controls to produce saturated or superheated steam or high temperature hot water. Lights off, operates, secures, and maintains power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment. Operates dampers, induced and forced draft fans, heat exchangers, fuel and air heaters, pumps, fuel pressure, control valves, fuel strainers, relief valves, water softeners, and other similar equipment. Regulates fuel feed and water levels and maintains required steam pressure and temperatures. Replenishes chemical feed tanks and monitor feed water conditioning equipment to control or remove impurities and entrapped gases. Performs difficult repairs and maintenance and during shutdown periods in equipment overhaul and preparation of boilers for inspection. The operators maintain efficient combustion levels and ensure compliance with air pollution laws or regulations. The operators use electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic controls, and zone charts in conjunction with meters, gauges, and computer generated data to determine adjustments or corrections necessary for proper boiler operations or changing load requirements. Adjusts fuel feeds and the volume and velocity of draft and other fire box variables to achieve maximum combustion efficiency with changing load demands or variations in fuel quality. Works using independent judgment and decisions in performing boiler plant operations and maintenance work. Regulates fuel feed and water levels and maintains required steam pressure and temperatures. Replenishes chemical feed tanks and monitors feed water conditioning equipment to control or remove impurities and entrapped gases. Independently starts, adjusts, maintains, and periodically monitors water level, fuel feed, pressure, and other gauges to assure efficient operation. Boilers operated under these conditions are designed to operate without constant attention. Services power boilers that typically include a variety of auxiliary components such as fuel delivery systems, induced draft fans, de-aerating equipment, water treatment equipment, economizers, and air compressors that often require regular adjustment and maintenance to meet rigid tolerances. Performs preventative and scheduled maintenance on plant systems and equipment including boiler feed pumps, fuel oil pumps, air compressors, turbines, generators, boiler fixtures, and combustion fans. Operates and performs maintenance on emergency electrical generators to meet plant electrical requirements when the main electrical source is unable to provide the necessary power. Incumbent is responsible for maintenance and repair of all package chilled water or air conditioning systems, such as units serving OR, Intensive Care Units, etc. Work Schedule: (Rotating) 7a-7p, 7p-7a, 7a-3p, 3p-11p Position Description Title/PD#: Utility Systems Repairer-Operator-Recruitment/Relocation Incentive/PD02007A Physical Requirements: The position will require heavy lifting (45 pounds and over), moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), heavy carrying (45 pounds and over), moderate carrying (15-44 pounds), straight pulling (8 hours), pulling hand over hand (8 hours), pushing (8 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking (8 hours), standing (8 hours), crawling (8 hours), kneeling (8 hours), repeated bending (8 hours), climbing-legs only (8 hours), and climbing use of legs and arms.
