The Technical Career Field (TCF) is a national workforce development program within VHA that was designed to replenish technical staff in critically identified positions.

Duties

The TCF career fields represent those technical fields where VA-specific knowledge and experience is desirable for success in the field. Individuals selected follow a formal training plan for two years during which they are trained, coached, and supervised by a preceptor. Preceptors are selected annually, through an extensive application process, for their technical expertise, their commitment to training and the suitability of their facility as a training location. *Selectees will be required to sign Mobility, Training, and Continued Service Agreements. This is an intermediate-level position located within Engineering Service in the Boiler and Chiller Plants working toward gaining the skill of a Journey Level 9 USRO. All work will be performed under close review by a Journeyman Level USRO. The Boiler Plant is a 24-hour per day operation. The incumbent participates in the Utility System Repairer Operator Technical Career Field (TCF) 2-year training program, designed to prepare participant for journeyman-level position. In collaboration with the preceptor, the individual develops an Individual Development Plan (IDP) that includes the programs objectives and activities in accordance with the training guide for TCF USRO training program. The incumbent trains to qualify as a participant in the areas of operations, maintenance and repair of state-or-the-art boiler, chiller plant and peripheral equipment. Progression to the Journeyman level is not automatic and the incumbent must apply for and meet qualifications of the position to continue his/her training. Work Schedule: Rotating 7:00 am - 7:00 pm; 12:00 Noon - 8:00 pm. 7:00pm - 7:00 am shift rotation is every 6 weeks. Physical Requirements: Frequently work in confined areas in and around boilers. Requires moderate to strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Frequently lift and carry boiler parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted. Occasionally, and with assistance, carries items weighing over 40 pounds. Working Conditions: Mainly works indoors, but occasionally work outside for short periods of time. Subject to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil and fumes. Subject to cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from acids, caustics, hot water, steam and contact with boilers. Work on catwalks and ladders.
