About the Position: The position is at the Fort Belvoir Trial Defense Service Office. The Trial Defense Service paralegal is responsible for providing attorney support to the National Capital Region Soldiers pending court-martial, nonjudicial punishment, involuntary administrative separation, or investigation.
Duties
Participates in the substantive development of court-martial and administrative elimination cases (ranging from aggravated assault, absent without leave, child abuse, conspiracy, driving under the influence, drug possession, indecent act, etc.
Conducts pretrial/preboard case analysis, by: Independently reviewing, analyzing and evaluating court-martial case files.
Researches and analyzes facts surrounding administrative actions to ensure discharge or adverse personnel actions meet regulatory requirements.
Performs investigative and interviewing duties by: Gathering and interpreting data from government agencies and private businesses/organizations for use in courts-martial and boards.
Observes courtroom activities and assists counsel with administrative requirements that arise during trial; and testifies at courts-martial and boards concerning witness interviews and relevant evidence.
Receives and reviews Military Justice Reports, Army Regulations, technical publications, LEXIS/WESTLAW updates, messages of concern to the Staff Judge Advocate and the Trial Defense Service.
Maintains defense case statistics and prepares a comprehensive case status report semimonthly.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience such as participating in the development of court-martial administrative elimination cases; conducting pretrial and per-board case analysis and reviewing Military Justice Reports, regulations,technical publications, and training memorandum. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07)
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or Ll.B. or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
