You will serve as a Hazardous Waste Disposer in the Port Operations Department of NB SAN DIEGO.

Duties

You will investigate all reported oil spills or sheens on water within area of responsibility. You will perform placement and opening/closing of oil boom around ships. You will distribute and recover absorbent pads in the water to recover any floating oil. You will maintain and repair oil spill equipment to include small boats, boat trailers, boom reels, oil boom, and all ancillary machinery. You will deliver or collect hazardous material to and from work sites following regulatory requirements (e.g., labeling, identification, containerization). You will review receipt documentation of hazardous waste for accuracy. Repack, consolidate, or blend hazardous wastes into containers for storage and shipment.

Requirements

  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Incumbent must have peripheral vision that will enable them to avoid falls and moving objects.
  • Incumbent must have sufficient hearing to hear verbal commands over surrounding noise of operating engines in the test tank or onboard the applicable boat.
  • Incumbent must be able to comply on occasion with emergent after hours, late night, and weekend work requirements.
  • Incumbent will be required to become fully qualified in the safe execution of boat launch and recovery principles and basic seamanship.
  • Incumbent will be exposed to the following; industrial dirt, dust, grease, oil, industrial fumes, and airborne particles. Industrial noise generated by operating machinery and equipment with the possibility of hearing loss.

Qualifications

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Assisting with deployment of oil containment boom around moored vessels; 2) Assist with oil spill boom maintenance to include replacing bad end connections and repairing rips in the booms; 3) Stock all oil spill recovery supplies; and 4) Perform preventive maintenance and repair on diesel engines.
