Duties
The incumbent serves as the Details Clerk within the Health Administration Service Section at Harry S. Truman Veterans Memorial Hospital Healthcare System. The Truman Veterans' Hospital and Clinics is a facility/health care system with comprehensive a research program and is a 1c complexity level category for VHA facilities.
The incumbent of the position performs a full range of standard and nonstandard office clerical assignment to resolve a variety of nonrecurring administrative problem. The incumbent performs a variety of assignment involving different and unrelated steps processes or methods. Examples include: Making next-of kin determinations: makes initial determinations for burial in VA or National Cemetery: coordinates and arranges contract burials: and advise next-of-kin of burial benefits. the incumbent must be knowledgeable of VA Regulations, Medical Center Polices, Medical Administration Service Polices and operational details. This knowledge is used in making determination of legal next-of-kin, assisting family member with and advise on burial allowance and add in the preparation and distribution pf death certificates and autopsy protocol procedures. Processes applications for State Veteran Home placements and reconciles data with state veteran homes to determine payments.

Qualifications

If you meet eligibility, then you may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: providing clerical support in a hospital ward, knowledge of patient admissions and outpatient processing procedures. Typical positions that could lead to this experience include, but are not limited to medical clerk, eligibility clerk, health benefits assistant, and travel clerk. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a bachelor's degree or four years of successfully completed college study leading to a bachelor's degree. (Copy of Transcript Required). OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-5 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-5. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position .

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily clerical; however, some walking, standing, bending and lifting is required.
