This position is located in Northern Navajo Medical Center, Business Office. The primary purpose of this position is to identify patients with eligibility for alternate resources and assisting them with the enrollment process. Incumbent reports to the Supervisory Health System Specialist.
Duties
Assists patients in applications for and uses of alternate resources; identifies all alternate resources available, such as, but not limited to Medicare, Medicaid, Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), Department of Veteran's Affairs, Bureau of Employment Compensation, Third Party Liability, Workers' Compensation, Children's Special Health Services, Aid to Families with Dependent Children, etc.
Performs a variety of patient representative functions including completion of application for alternate resources, making home and hospital visits to interview patients, arranges transportation for patients; interpreting rules and regulations for alternate resources for patients. Follows up on all pending applications.
Assists patients by establishing and verifying eligibility for alternate resources. Provides information on rights and benefits of resources and tactfully advises patients of non-payment or denial of claims. If denials or other rejection of alternate resource occur, employee intervenes on patient's behalf in disputing and debating the denial by the third party sources.
Interviews patients and or family member to obtain pertinent and accurate patient registration information. Assists patients in completing new or updated forms for the Patient Registration System.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-06 Grade Level:
1 year of specialized experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples of Specialized Experience: interviewed patients or their representatives to identify problems relating to care; explained policies, procedures, or services to patients using medical or administrative knowledge; and/or refer patients to appropriate health care services.

GS-07 Grade Level:
1 year of specialized experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples of Specialized Experience: investigated and directed patient inquiries or complaints to appropriate medical staff members and follow up to ensure satisfactory resolution; identify and share research, recommendations, or other information regarding legal liabilities, risk management, or quality of care; and/or coordinate communication between patients, family members, medical staff, administrative staff, or regulatory agencies.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
