Duties

Perform fire prevention inspections on diverse types of operations, storage, systems, and equipment. Conduct training for fire fighter personnel in proper methods of evacuation, fire, and other types of emergencies. Document findings (written/oral) on deficiencies and recommend corrective actions e.g. initiating work orders or repair. Inspect systems and equipment installed by contractors to ensure fire prevention and protection code requirements are met in accordance with Army regulations and National fire codes. Conduct fire drills in all types of occupancies such as schools, hospital facilities, aircraft hangars, maintenance shops etc. Develop fire prevention and fire safety education lectures for demonstration purposes for a diverse audience. Respond to emergency incidents as part of a firefighting team.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work 60 hours per week (120 hours Biweekly) with the one 24 hours tour of duty weekly and may require working weekends and holidays.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.

Current Department of Army Civilian Employees Applying on Time-Limited Assignments In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:1) Fire prevention inspections on diverse types of operations; 2) Conduct visual and operational inspections of automatic and manual fire protection alarm systems, fire pumps, and associated equipment; 3) Perform minor preventive checks on fire protection alarm systems and equipment; and 4) Perform a full range of firefighting duties that include responding to emergency incidents, fire suppression, fire investigation, and hazardous materials abatement. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). Certifications: In addition to the above requirements, this position requires that the incumbent possess and maintain the following DoD IFSAC or Pro-Board issued certifications: Fire Inspector I, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor I, Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HAZMAT Awareness, Airport Firefighter, Driver Operator-Pumper and Driver Operator-Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF). You MUST submit a copy of your certifications with your application package. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Fire Prevention, Inspection, and Code ComplianceFire SuppressionFire/Life Safety Training, Public Education, and Outreach Maximum Entry Age (MEA)The MEA for Firefighters is 37. An employee originally hired into a covered position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37. Maximum Reentry Age An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57 if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position. Waivers to Maximum Entry Age MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by local Command. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07). Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade, time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
