About the Position: Serve as Station Chief providing daily operations oversight and direction to an assigned crew and fire station.
Duties
Supervise a firefighting crew providing oversight and directing daily operations.
Oversee the control and extinguishing of fires, rescuing of people endangered by fire, and reduction or elimination of potential fire hazards.
Direct the operation of firefighting vehicles such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, crash-rescue trucks, and airport rescue vehicles.
Respond to firefighting activities, search and rescue, HAZMATS incidents, crash and rescue operations, and medical emergencies.
Conduct visual and mechanical checks of fire alarm systems to ensure operability.
Plan and organize work and evaluate subordinates performance.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations you are required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires you to wear the prescribed uniform and personal protective equipment while on duty in compliance with safety and health directives (OSHA).
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
- Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis which includes 48 hours shift on and 72 hour shift off with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
- This position is an Inclement Weather Essential position and maintain a functioning telephone to aid in contact during recall situations.
- The duties of this position require you to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week unless on business travel or leave based on the needs of the organization.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
- The duties of this position require you to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
- This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
- This position requires a pre-employment physical fitness assessment and continued participation in a scheduled physical fitness program as directed by Army regulatory guidance.
- This position requires you to work both inside and outside with possibility exposure to inclement weather.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes
Experience performing advanced firefighting techniques and rescue operations;
Experience operating fire communications equipment, such as telephone and radios, extrication tools, ropes, or medical tools;
Experience performing emergency medical procedures appropriate to the illness or injury; and
Experience controlling hazardous materials incidents.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08) or the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this position, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, this position requires you to possess the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification or a state certification in the U.S. and DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO Board) certifications in accordance with DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program DoD 6055.06 which includes Firefighter I and II, Hazardous Materials Technician, Fire Officer I and II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, Airport Firefighter, and Hazardous Materials Incident Commander. Maximum Entry Age (MEA)
The MEA for Firefighters is 37. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 37th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions.
Maximum Re-entry Age
An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57, if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.
Waivers to Maximum Entry Age
MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by local Command.
