About the Position: The Garrison provides support services to more than 25,000 military, government civilian and contractor personnel and continually coordinates with various directors, special staff elements and tenants. The garrison management mission involves serving as a Power Generation platform, major training site including Initial Entry, Mobilization Combat Training Center and/or Reserve Service tenant Commanders and Directors.

Duties

Performs noninvasive Basic Life Support duties for the injured and sick throughout the installation. Provides first level of field care based upon assessment findings, treats conditions based on specific symptoms observed or described by the patient. Serves as a Firefighter (Hazmat Tech/Basic Life Support) and member of a structural and/or crash firefighting and rescue crew required to engage in firefighting and rescue activities considered immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH). Combats structural, aircraft, electrical, chemical, and volatile fuel fires and wild-land, brush, woods, and grass fires that often involve or are caused by experimental explosives or weapons systems. Alternates through all firefighting crew positions and utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Performs as a Hazardous Material Technician, as defined by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 474, in the mitigation of hazardous material spills and/or releases. As a Hazardous Material Technician, the employee conducts research to identify the product, PPE required, and the dangers associated with the material.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid government and state driver's license.
• This position requires Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) up to 10% of the time away from the current duty location.
• This position requires a 72-hour weekly tour of duty and may be required to work overtime, nights, weekends and holidays.
• This position requires the incumbent to sign the Department of the Army Drug Free Federal Workplace Program Form, DA-5019-R and is subjected to random drug testing.
• Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
• This position requires the incumbent to pass Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Fit Test.
• This position requires the incumbent to complete and pass the record Physical Ability Test (PAT) upon selection and annually.
• This position requires the incumbent to obtain Driver Operator - ARFF, Driver Operator - Aerial, and Driver Operator - MWS certifications within 12 months of being placed into the position.
• Position is designated as Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other emergency situations (natural or man-made disaster) incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
• The incumbent must participate in the department's wellness program to include a structured physical exercise program.

Qualifications

Firefighter Special Retirement Coverage (Primary/Rigorous) This position has been identified by Department of Army and approved by the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness as a covered primary, rigorous position for special retirement coverage as identified in 5 CFR 831 Subpart I for CSRS Retirement coverage and 5 CFR 842 Subpart H for FERS retirement coverage. The individual hired is subject to Special Retirement provisions to include additional contributions to the retirement fund, mandatory separation/retirement at age 57 with 20 years of approved special retirement provisions service, options for early retirement at any age after 25 years of approved special retirement provisions service, or at age 50 with 20 years of approved special retirement provisions service. Department of Defense (DoD), in accordance with 5 USC 3307, has determined an individual must be appointed to their first/original appointment into a DoD position that has been identified and approved as a primary firefighter no later than the last day of the month in which they become 37. Preference eligible veterans over the age of 37, may apply regardless of the age restriction. If selected, a waiver of the age restriction will be requested by the hiring official for approval by the Department of Army. An individual who is past the maximum entry age (37) who previously served in an approved primary position may be reinstated to a covered primary position provided they meet the applicable qualification requirements AND will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered service as a firefighter by the last day of the month in which they become 57. The Department of Army may approve an exception to the maximum entry age (37) for the original entry of a non-veteran-preference-eligible applicant into a primary covered firefighter position. Exceptions shall be extremely rare and based only on a compelling hardship to the mission. Should an exception be granted, the employee shall be separated on the last day of the month in which he/she completes 20 years of special retirement provisions covered service.
